Worried About Your Bone Health?
Osteopenia and osteoporosis are common conditions that weaken bones and increase the risk of fractures. Osteopenia is an early stage of bone loss where bone density is lower than normal but not severe enough to be osteoporosis. Without treatment, osteopenia can progress to osteoporosis, making bones fragile and more prone to breaks — often without any warning until a fracture happens.
A DEXA scan (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is the most reliable test to measure bone mineral density. Results are given as a T-score:
| Optimal bone density | 0.0 to +1.0 or higher |
| Normal bone density | -1.0 to 0.0 |
| Osteopenia | -1.0 to -2.5 |
| Osteoporosis | -2.5 or lower |
Adults over 40, especially those going through or after menopause, face a higher risk. Fragile bones can lead to serious injuries from falls, impacting mobility, independence, and quality of life.
Understanding Bone Loss and Its Causes
Bone density naturally decreases with age, and menopause-related hormonal changes can speed up this process. Other factors like poor nutrition, low calcium and vitamin D intake, certain health conditions, and lack of weight-bearing exercise also contribute to bone loss. Early detection through a DEXA scan and proactive management can help slow or even reverse bone decline.
